Psychiatry

            Government of Tamilnadu established the Govt.Thoothukudi Medical College in the year 2000. The college admits 100 students to M.B.B.S course from 2000-2012 and 150 students from 2013. Since 2000, Psychiatry Department is functioning for Out Patient (OP) and InPatient (IP) treatment to people who have problem in thinking, feeling, perception and behavior.

 A separate block (building) in hospital is provided for psychical out patient service and in patient management.

Psychiatry Department is functioning with following staffmembers.

Staff Nurses: 

Morning shift               -1 staff (Out Patient service)

                        – 1 staff (In Patient Ward)

Afternoon shift -1 staff (In Patient Ward)

Night shift -1 staff (In Patient Ward)

Outpatient service:

OP Timing: 8.00am to 12.00 noon   Monday to Saturday

 The individual seeking for psychiatric consultation first get hospital PIN number atoutpatientregistration counter at hospital entrance. Then the individualcome to psychiatry block  and nursing staff at OP registration counter enquires the individual’s problem and assigned psychiatry OP number as new patient.

                        Then new patient is evaluated byduty psychiatrist and given pharmacological treatment and psychotherapy. Similarly follow-up patients are evaluated and prescribed medications.

                         Medicines are provided to new and follow up patients at pharmacy which has separate counter for psychotropic medications.

                  Psycho social interventions are provided by social worker in OPD.

Inpatient service:

Male ward-10 beds     Female ward-10 beds

             Patients needing acute symptomatic management are admitted in male or female psychiatric ward. Duty psychiatrist examines patient and gives investigation & treatment orders. Nursing staff on shift duty follows treatment orders and takes care of patients need.

           If inpatient needing Electro convulsive therapy (ECT), modified ECT is given to inpatient with IV anesthetics and muscle relaxant  administered by duty anesthetist.

            Psycho social interventions are provided by social worker  and psychologist in DEIC for outpatients and inpatients

TAEI WARD:

  Patients requiring treatments beyond OPD hours are seen by emergency department physician. If immediate psychiatric interventions are needed, call duty psychiatrist is informed.  Psychiatrist examines the patient in TAEI ward and gives proper management.

Disability Board:

Many patients and care givers are requesting to issue disability certificate for getting benefits provided by Govt. These patients are examined in detail by psychiatrist in OPD. IQ assessment and psychometric evaluation are done. Then disability with percentage report is given for the eligible patients as per the disability act.

Medical Board:

Several patients are referred from Jail/Court and other Department with request to examine the patient from Medical board for clarification about

  1. Fitness to stand trial
  2. Fitness to job
  3. Ability to take care of person and property
  4. Current mental state and its implications

Sometimes patients are admitted for observation (minimum 10 days) and evaluated completely by psychiatrist. Psychometric evaluations are done. Report is submitted to medical board.

Suicide prevention:

                           Patients who attempted suicide are admitted in TAEI ward and life saving medical intervention are given. Then counseling is given to patients to prevent further suicide attempt in psychiatry OPD.

De addiction:

                     Substance use disorder (alcohol, nicotine, cannabis) patients are examined in psychiatry OPD. Individual counseling and Group therapy are provided to stop substance use.  Complicated withdrawal symptoms and acute symptomatic management needing patients are admitted in IP ward for proper management.

Child psychiatry:

  • In association with District early intervention Centrein pediatric department, we provide treatment for child psychiatric disorders

Teaching

MBBS students are posted in batches of 30 to psychiatry department as part of their Ist clinical year postings. These students are taught about basics of psychiatry by staff members. They are also encouraged and trained in eliciting history and psychological symptoms from both outpatients and inpatients. when the same  students are  posted in CRRI period they are further trained in pharmacological and psychological management of  psychiatric patents.

Postgraduate medical students from Medicine ,paediatrics and neurology are posted in Psychiatry department during their 1st year of their post graduation

 Nursing students  from both Government and private colleges are posted in psychiatry department to learn the basics of psychiatry. Quizzes and CME programs regularly conducted for thebenefits  of undergraduate students.

MENTAL HEALTH ACT 2017 –Registration

                As per the above act our department  is registered with State Mental Health Authority ,Govt of Tamilnadu  (RII-134)
