PROFILE OF DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE
GOVERNMENT THOOTHUKUDI MEDICAL COLLEGE
The Government Thoothukudi Medical College, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology was started in year 2000 with an annual intake of 100 students for MBBS course.Medico legal postmortem and other medico-legal works was started from the same year.
It is located in the first floor of Faculty building of Medical College with suitable accommodation for all teaching as well as non-teaching faculties. Originally started with 100 student’s intake, now it has been increased to 150 students per year.
The necessary infrastructure equipment and furniture are available.
The Department library has 227 books as well as national and international Forensic journals.
The museum is stacked with adequate number of specimens (neatly labeled catalogues) of Forensic pathology interest, toxicology, charts, 170 Photos and weapons with a separate room for preparation.
The mortuary is located in a separate building just 100 meters away from the department with spacious accommodation for Police personnel, Public (relatives of the deceased) reception hall, water facility for public, platform for 50 students to view autopsy, two modern autopsy tables, four steel autopsy tables, cold storage for 21 bodies, a separate room for autopsy of decomposed bodies, a generator.
Research lab, practical lab, two Demo halls and separate lecture hall are readily available so as to face MCI in near future.
MEDICO-LEGAL ACTIVITIES
On an average of 800 to 900 autopsies are performed every year. Examination of sexual assault cases as well age certification and spot postmortem also conducted.
At present department is engaged in multifarious activities of teaching, training and research. It is involved in medico-legal postmortems, casualty work, Clinical Forensic medicine Services & court related works.
Department is imparting expert opinions in referred cases from courts, Government hospitals, Crime Branch, and Investigating agencies.
- Casualty Services
Round the clock supervision of Casualty for imparting Expert Opinion (medico legal services) in requisite cases belonging to jurisdiction of Thoothukudi district.
These include cases of injury, Criminal abortion, sexual offences, poisoning and other complicated medico-legal cases.
The department is attending all the calls pertaining to medical examination in police & judicial custody.
2. Clinical Forensic Medicine
The department examines cases of age estimation, medical examination, marriage disputes and potency.
Moreover, hospital emergency and casualty department comes under the control of Forensic Medicine department and our qualified forensic person will go daily to casualty on rotation basis to monitor the duties there.
3. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
On the academic side, classes for 150 MBBS students, seminars, Group discussion, CRRI training, witnessing autopsy and exposure to court procedures for UG students are conducted.
